Call for Application – Early Career Researchers
Democracy, Governance, Inclusiveness and Trust
The contemporary global landscape is confronted with a multitude of unprecedented social, economic, technological, environmental and geopolitical challenges. These include issues such as migration, climate change emergencies, energy crises, armed conflict, political extremism, the erosion of democratic institutions, protest movements, violence, corruption and growing public distrust in governance and expertise. These challenges not only affect the fundamental structures and processes that underpin the cohesion of our societies, but also reverberate through the institutions of democratic governance, particularly in the field of higher education.
These topics could also be investigated through an examination of the role played by heritage in society through different international and national perspectives and value systems. Early studies focused primarily on political and historically defined national boundaries as the main context for creating heritage and forming identities. However, in recent decades, the field of museum and heritage studies has undergone significant growth and diversification, with a focus on a wide range of societal issues. These issues comprise decolonisation, indigenous heritage, repatriation, conflict, contestation, ownership, community engagement, activism, human rights, accessibility, inclusivity, health and wellbeing. This expansion has engendered more nuanced understandings of what constitutes heritage for different groups and how they may attribute particular values to heritage and how this may contribute to fostering a more inclusive democratic context.
The purpose of this call is to invite early career researchers to lay the foundations of a broader research project within Re:ERUA as a trial run addressing the interplay between democracy, governance, inclusiveness and trust, at the heart of both immediate crises and longer-term predicaments. We seek research initiatives that employ a variety of methodological approaches, span multiple disciplines and offer cross-national perspectives, ideally involving a consortium of at least two members of the ERUA Alliance to help us understand the discontent and turbulence affecting many societies. The methodology and values of the project should be in line with our Charter for Common Research Framework Programme. Proposals will be expected to combine knowledge and expertise from the humanities and social sciences, arts, and the technical and/or physical sciences.
Practice-based, action and participatory research will be encouraged, as well as innovative and collaborative approaches across disciplines. At the end of the project, we expect the team of early-career researchers to submit a 25-page mock grant application to the Scientific Council in line with one of the topics defined within Horizon Europe’s Cluster 2 Culture, Creativity and Inclusive society work programme.
